Mexican Feather Grass

One of a few plants to occur naturally in southwestern North America, Mexican Feather Grass is considered a cool weather grass and is popular in landscaping for its delicate, thread-like leaves that billow gracefully in even the slightest breeze.

Care

Stipa is a neutral grass. Where temperatures get colder than 20 degrees F, the plants should be treated as annuals. Once the grass turns brown it can either be removed immediately or removed in the spring. It should not be expected to live through the winter and begin growing again in the spring. In areas where winter temperatures remain above 20 degrees it should be considered a perennial and the following information should be useful. Evergreen or neutral grasses are usually plants that look like grasses but aren't actually classified as grasses, they are generally called grass-like plants.

Growth Habit

2’-2' both tall and wide. By late spring, this ornamental grass really glows with a blend of verdant green. As the weather warms up, those colors transform into a mixture of golden and green blades. Several golden seed heads start to make an appearance in May. Those golden plumes spread above the foliage by mid-June. Between the leaves and flowers, this ornamental sparkles when the sun shines on the plant. The colors continue to delight into the autumn season as its foliage changes into a splendid harvest of gold hues. Those golden seed heads are in full abundance until the late winter.

Nontoxic to humans and pets. Deer resistant.
